Sudoku is the most popular logic puzzle in the world. Published daily in newspapers in over 100 countries, played by millions online, and available in every bookshop's puzzle section, it has become the crossword's numerical counterpart — a structured mental exercise that requires zero mathematical ability and total logical discipline.
Despite its Japanese name ("Suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru" — the digits must remain single), Sudoku was invented by an American. Howard Garns, a retired architect from Indiana, created the puzzle under the name "Number Place" and it was first published by Dell Magazines in 1979. Garns never saw his puzzle become a global phenomenon — he died in 1989, fifteen years before the Sudoku craze swept the world.
The Japanese publisher Nikoli discovered the puzzle in 1984 and renamed it. Their version added a constraint that became central to the puzzle's appeal: no more than 32 clue cells, arranged symmetrically. This constraint made puzzles visually elegant and ensured a minimum complexity floor. By 1986, Sudoku was a regular feature in Japanese puzzle magazines. In 2004, New Zealand-born judge Wayne Gould, who had been hand-crafting Sudoku for six years, pitched the puzzle to The Times of London. It was published on 12 November 2004, and within weeks other British papers were running it. The craze spread globally within months.
The Rules and the Logic
The constraint is simple: in a valid 9×9 Sudoku grid, each row, each column, and each of the nine 3×3 boxes must contain every digit from 1 to 9 exactly once. This means 81 cells, 81 digits, each digit appearing exactly 9 times across the grid.
The crucial fact about properly constructed Sudoku: it never requires guessing. Every step can be deduced through pure logic from the given clues. This is what distinguishes Sudoku from trial-and-error number filling — it's a puzzle of deduction, not enumeration.
Solving Techniques
- Naked Singles. If a cell has only one possible digit (all others are eliminated by row, column, and box constraints), that digit is the answer. Scan for these first — they're free placements.
- Hidden Singles. If a digit can only go in one cell within a row, column, or box (even though other digits are also possible for that cell), place it there. Most Easy and Medium puzzles are solvable on naked singles + hidden singles alone.
- Naked Pairs/Triples. If two cells in a row/column/box can only contain the same two digits, those digits can be eliminated from all other cells in that row/column/box. This cascade of elimination unlocks harder puzzles.
- X-Wing. A more advanced technique: if a digit appears in exactly two cells in each of two different rows, and those cells are in the same columns, the digit can be eliminated from all other cells in those columns. This pattern-based elimination is the gateway to Expert-level solving.
