2048 is one of the most successful mobile puzzle games ever made — and it arrived almost by accident. Gabriele Cirulli created the original version in a single weekend in March 2014, built it in JavaScript as a side project to see whether he could make a game from scratch, and published it on GitHub. Within a week, it had millions of plays. Within a month, it was a global phenomenon, spawning hundreds of clones, apps, and academic papers on optimal strategy.
The game's design borrows from Threes! (published two months earlier by Asher Vollmer and Greg Wohlwend), which used a 4×4 grid and merging mechanics. Where Threes! combined 1s and 2s to make 3s and then multiplied by 3, 2048 simplified the concept to pure doubling — tiles only merge with equal tiles, always producing a power of 2. This simplification made the mechanics immediately intuitive and the progression feel satisfying in a way that was instantly shareable.
The Mathematics Behind 2048
Every tile in 2048 is a power of 2: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048. To reach the 2048 tile, you need to create two 1024 tiles and merge them. To create a 1024 tile, you need two 512s. And so on down the chain — a full progression requires precisely 1+2+4+8+16+32+64+128+256+512+1024 = 2047 merges in total, starting from 2-tiles. Each merge adds that tile's value to your score, so a perfect path to 2048 produces a score of exactly 20480.
The theoretical maximum tile on a 4×4 grid is 131072 (2^17), though achieving it requires a near-perfect sequence of random tile placements. Most players who reach 2048 on the first playthrough are already performing better than the vast majority of casual players — the median game ends around 800–1200 score.
Strategy: The Corner Method
The strongest approach, used by most high-score players:
- Pick a corner and commit. Choose one corner (usually top-left or bottom-left) and always keep your highest tile there. Never slide in a direction that would move it away from the corner.
- Build a snake. Arrange tiles in a descending snake pattern from your corner: highest → second-highest → third-highest → along the snake path. When tiles merge, they naturally maintain the snake.
- Prioritise left/down (or right/down). With a bottom-left strategy, you mostly swipe left and down. You only swipe right when forced and immediately correct back toward the corner.
- Never isolate a high tile. A high-value tile stranded in the middle of the board is almost always game-ending. You cannot move it without disturbing the entire structure.
